I thought that if i let anyone in, they’d find out what was broken about me. And then not only would they know, i’d know too.

Rewind: June 2023

It’s a bit wild the emotional rollercoaster that was June. With layoffs and new nephews and everything in between, I’m wondering if this whiplash of emotion is going to hit me soon. but I suppose only time will tell. For now, I’m just trying to stay present.

Loving

My new nephew Theo obviously is the highlight of this month. And I’m still in disbelief that I get to a little human grow up in a completely fun capacity (i.e. Aunt Life). Also having family come over towards the tail end of the month to celebrate this birth, was a nice distraction from otherwise work-related woes. I love when the family comes in town, no matter how tiring it gets.

Also still in disbelief that I’m an aunt, but more importantly that my sister is now a mom. I’ve never quite imagined Pamy to be maternal, but I guess things change when you give birth and it’s such a privilege to watch her grow, too.

Working On

How does one move on from layoffs. It feels incredibly fresh and honestly, i’m not sure if I know how to move on from this. On top of that, my current manager is also moving on and I just don’t know how I’m going to be able to transition into whatever new set-up the team will have. I’m lucky I have a good support system in friends but, it’s going to be tough.

Considering it’s my second survival of a layoff, i’m just happy to be employed but also just a bit exhausted emotionally. And the guilt is real, so here’s to things being a little better in July.

Feeling

Grateful for all the support that I’ve been getting from loved ones. And even as I say goodbye to good friends leaving the country, and goodbye to hangouts we adored, it’s gonna take a lot of emotional labour to get back to steadiness. My friend Chetna, a woman I look up to in terms of how she’s handled her career, is leaving for London and though I'm going to miss her, it’s going to be so much fun to visit her in London.

Then Hanis, a cafe that holds some nice Python-related memories with Taylor is closing down and we went to the last day of the cafe and it was quite nice to see a lot of folks turn up. It was nice to say goodbye to the staff who were transferring to another branch and just soak up the energy. A fitting way to close out the first half of 2023, I’d like to think.
