I thought that if i let anyone in, they’d find out what was broken about me. And then not only would they know, i’d know too.

Yellowstone

I didn’t realise till I was four shows in that I had a fascination with cowboys. Starting from Heartland, to Hallmark’s Ride and now for some Yellowstone in my life, I actually enjoy watching these Western shows in a modern-day setting.

And getting into Yellowstone was just so easy. Seeing Kevin Costner age like a fine wine has been great. He’s essentially a mobster in Montana and I’m really sad that I got into this show on its last season of airing but I’m glad I caught up. As patriarch John Dutton trying to protect his land and his family, so much goes on in every episode but also so much doesn’t go on. Sure, he’s fucking the Governor and wasn’t a great father to his kids, but boy does he show his love and loyalty in different ways and yeah, he just wants to be a grandpa on his farm so please leave him alone.

Then we get Wes Bentley’s Jamie, the adopted son who didn’t realise this — though he really should have given how much of a “black sheep” he’s been and just how he’s been used and abused for his lawyerly skills. I only remember him from American Beauty and boy does this guy go through it with just sheer emotional rollercoaster of trying to get daddy’s affection.

Then there’s Beth by Kelly Reily who seems like a caricature of a bad girl but does it so well. Everytime she says Daddy, I honestly can’t tell if she has some secret romance with her father (gross and no) or she’s really just a little girl guilty for “killing their mom” and never having been forgiven for it. And this is the tension that is craziest to watch with John Dutton because you know he loves her and also hasn’t forgiven her for “killing his wife”.

And then Kayce, the prodigal son who’s left to run the farm when they abruptly killed Lee aka Dave Annabel from Brothers and Sisters whom I was shocked to see was killed off so quickly. And his Indian wife Monica who has her own issues with marrying into basically the white mob of Montana and their son Tate who is the apple of John’s eye.

I much prefer the bunkhouse shenanigans with Lloyd and Rip and Jimmy and I didn’t think that. Even Ryan and Colby and Teeter have grown on me. The barrel racer girls though, can get the fuck out — i agree with John here. And I could write a whole paragraph more about Rip and Beth’s interesting love story because that really is what keeps me watching as I crochet my Harry Styles cardigan.

But needless to say, I am hooked on this drama and can’t wait for more of this. I have 2 more seasons to go . The latest season 5 and whenver they launch the last one, and I’m just glad I got my dad hooked too.
